You can still calculate EPS for a private company, but private companies tend to care less about it. Most of the time you use EBITDA or EBIT multiples for valuation purposes. We don’t think P / E multiples are terribly meaningful for most companies, including private companies.

In the case of a private company I am valuing right now, there are number of shares outstanding. Do you think I should still put less weight on EPS number because it’s a private company?
Thanks!

Yeah AIM can work for smaller companies, but there’s no real equivalent in the US.

Doesn’t the US have anything similar?

It doesn’t matter, you can use commas if you want. Sure you can list that as an interest.

Why do you use semi-colons in listing classes taken and honors received in resume? Why not use comma? (somewhat trivial question, but really curious!) Also, is it OK to write “fitness enthusiast” for interest if I regularly work out in the gym?

I don’t think your dreams are shattered. Many banks have a strict cutoff they use to weed out people with low GPAs, and it’s difficult to get past this if you’re put in the same applicant pool as everyone else. If you have any special circumstances, e.g. being a Varsity Athlete or having a highly unusual background, you need to make these extremely prominent on your resume. Although banks may still use a GPA cutoff, you at least stand a better chance if your special circumstances are immediately clear and humans are reading your resume. Network extensively and use your school’s alumni network.

GPA only matters for getting your foot in the door; if you are persistent enough you can leverage the alumni network to do the same, and often a recommendation from someone very high up is more useful than a high GPA.

I’m in a very bad situation right now. I go to Vanderbilt and I’m a junior, but I have a low GPA (2.9 before this semester ends). Most of the banks that posted their internship positions on our school website requires at least a 3.2. I’ve gone to all the information sessions at my school and have gone to a weekend trip organized by our school during fall break. However, my GPA is so low. Are my investment banking dreams shattered at this point or is there something I can still do?

Thanks

Eh, I think that article is exaggerated and probably won’t happen exactly as they forecast. If Barclays really hasn’t gained much traction in the areas they mention, it’s not a surprise that certain divisions would be shut down.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I think private conglomerates are more common outside the US in general.
