We are restructuring this entire site and removing many of these older articles, so the one you’re referencing is gone. This interview series is very old (10+ years) and not very good, as most of it has nothing to do with “distressed hedge funds at all” – the descriptions are so generic they could be for almost any hedge fund.

We are going to publish a dedicated article on distressed hedge funds later this year.

When I click on the link at the bottom of the page for part 2 (“From M&A Boutique Bank to Distressed Hedge Fund, Part 2: On the Job, Pay, and Exit Opportunities”) it takes me to a totally different article (“Distressed Private Equity: The Best Place to Invest When the World is Collapsing?”). Is there a way to access the second part? Thanks.

Yes, having some sort of IB experience would most definitely help.

I plan to attend a JD/MBA program at a m7, not one of the top 3. I was formerly an entrepreneur without finance experience. If I were to make it into a boutique as an associate, how would I maximize my chances that I would exit into a DD fund?

Is it much more difficult for an IB associate without finance pre-mba experience (compared to an analyst) to exit to a fund?

I think option 2 and 3 are probably best. If you can transfer internally I’d do that. I’d also build up a network of contacts in PE to increase your chances. Otherwise, going back to a top tier grad school can help. https://mergersandinquisitions.com/private-equity-recruiting/ may also be useful.

I work in an unrelated field (prime brokerage) at a US bulge bracket, just made VP. I
‘m ready to take title cuts as I have no prior investment experience. Here are a couple of options I can think of to break in to private equity/distressed investing:

– start out from scratch (i.e. analyst) at a boutique PE firm;
– go to grad school and focus on financial modelling courses (and networking)
– keep my current job but start investing personally (valuation, financial analysis etc and build track record) – the question here is how long though, can’t spend more than 1-2 years on this;

Is there other possibility and what would you say is the best strategy?

Thank you.

I’d say investment experience – ability to analyse stocks, industry trends and pick out solid investments. Investment clubs etc would be useful in this case.

Need some advice. What kind of experience is most favored by AM firms? or most related experience prior to interning at an AM firm. Planning to land an internship in AM in final year, so where should I be looking at?

Thank you in advance
