I’m not sure what you’re asking (???). The best way to find bankers is to search on LinkedIn and message them there or go through email once you have their names and firm names.
]]>how to get connected with IB community. I am marketing director of a small firm now working the west coast, I want to know where my people are
]]>Thanks for sharing. Yes, you always have to decide on your preferred work/life balance and act accordingly.
]]>I do not, sorry. The best bet is to get Capital IQ or a similar resource that lets you look up investment firms. To find investors smaller than “firm-level,” it would probably come down to networking and joining relevant local organizations (CFA Society, other investing/PE/VC-type groups, etc.).
]]>Not sure about that one, but I would assume Montreal is the same size or slightly bigger (but still smaller than Toronto) simply because Quebec has a bigger population and more businesses than BC (e.g., https://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/170814/dq170814b-eng.htm). Indeed also seems to show more finance job openings in Montreal.
]]>I was wondering if Montreal has a bigger finance industry than Vancouver???
]]>Incorrect. UBC’s PMF has placed alumni at “tier 1 firms” such as KKR and Goldman Sachs (check LinkedIn or website for proof). SFU BEAM team places alumni at Big 5 Canadian banks on a good day (once again, check LinkedIn or website for proof).
I currently attend SFU and have many good friends on the “BEAM” team so I speak with some authority on this topic.
I don’t think you need to start networking right now, but when your second year starts, yes, start doing it then. Recruiting this year started 1.5 years in advance of summer internships, so you need to network in advance of that.
Go for the banks that have the most alumni, even if they’re the bigger ones. In the worst case, you can probably just intern at this leveraged finance firm once again in case your summer plans come up. It’s more important to start recruiting for 3rd-year roles as soon as possible so you don’t miss the deadlines for them.
