Yes, there will be some discussion of compensation before that, usually as it becomes clear which acquirer is most interested in the target.

Is this a step that is generally done prior to the DA?

Congrats on your offer. You maybe one year older than the rest of the class when you apply to analyst roles, which isn’t a big deal. If you want a headstart over others, it maybe best to start university first. You can then spend one summer your 1st year at Accenture, and plan your 2nd and 3rd at a finance firm/investment bank. With the above being said, yes the pay, experience as well as network you gain maybe very useful to you down the line so I think it may be a good idea. The one year delay is unlikely to hurt your IB applications. If you want to go back to business school after graduation, perhaps this one-year will help you.

I’m from the UK and currently in my last year of Sixth-form (/Highschool?) and have been offered an Analyst intern position at Accenture for a year before heading to university – my question is: will there be any disadvantage to spending a year at Accenture before going to uni and eventually trying to break into IB? The pay will be useful and I’ll get a fair bit of networking opportunities with various people and industries etc – it will probably also give me an advantage when applying to the top business schools here in the UK which will obviously be helpful in the long run. But will an IB firm look and question it or does it not really matter at this age?

Thanks! I hear what you’re saying, but:

1. Hardly any articles are written about IB these days anyway. Most coverage is on other sectors entirely. Yes, most of it is still finance-related, but it’s expanded greatly beyond what it looked like 5-6 years ago.

2. Yes, coverage of other jobs outside finance could be interesting but it will not be the core focus of the site. It would be like TechCrunch rebranding itself to focus on basket weaving.

3. Finally, I appreciate your support but I don’t expect everyone to read or stay interested forever. I attempt to make it more interesting by writing about other topics and expanding into different areas, but there’s only so much you can say about a relatively specialized field.

I personally suggest you could write more alternatives other than financial jobs (ibanking, hedge fund, pe, or vc)

wsj just published an article mentions that how the elite mba students are switching their options from financial companies to tech companies. The time is totally different from 6 years ago, where you could find every elite b-school college students was thinking about investment banking.

Considering your blog’s core target group are the people who are ambitious, goal oriented, and money-savvy, you may talk more about start ups, entrepreneur, fortune 500 strategy team, and so on and so forth.

I started to read your blog few years ago when I was still in investment banking. It has been truly great pleasure reading it. But if you still keep on writing things about financial stuff(which is not a heated topic anymore), it is, frankly, getting boring.

Yes, I think they are both good choices, at least if you want to stay in Texas and do energy IB. They would not be as good if you wanted to go to NY or another city (anyone else with more local knowledge feel free to add to this).
