I’d add one additional layer, that you want to find the strategy roles where the team is really the center of gravity at the firm. If the team is just used as internal consultants, and work is taken as recommendations…. The team doesn’t have as much influence and will have worse upward mobility within the company.

Teams that are the center of gravity and really work on high altitude strategy (where this type of thinking and analysis is valued) will be more compelling from a work experience and comp pov.

Thanks. No, sorry, I do not. We do not usually go into the details of specific companies in these career articles.

Great article!
Do you know where big techs bizops and strategy teams (ex: Google business operations and strategy) sit with regards to corporate strategy?
Tim

Thanks for the reply, sounds like I need to position myself into a more consulting like role to get the strategy experience.

This article was written in April 2021, so unless compensation has changed dramatically in ~6 months, yes.

I don’t think corporate finance would help much for corporate strategy roles vs. your existing business development experience. You’re probably better off getting more actual strategy-related experience if you want to move over, but I’m not sure how you do that without leaving your current role. Courses/certifications: I don’t really follow the market here for strategy, but I don’t think data analytics would add a huge amount. It might be helpful on the margins, but less so than getting something that looks more like consulting experience.

Are these salaries and total compensation still relevant in today’s hot job market of November 2021?

I started my career (3 years) in external auditing / assurance with the same company. I’ve applied to 5-7 positions recently that all had an emphasis on finance strategy and it getting to understand the roles more clearly, it sounded like they aligned with Corporate finance, which I’d rather stay away from. Curious to get your point of view on if these job experiences align with what a corporate strategy team would be looking for or do I need to position myself with more relative experience? Also, are there courses / certifications that could help me stand out from other candidates? I’ve thought about data analytics as one… Thanks!

FP&A and corporate strategy are very different. FP&A is based on accounting and budgeting and projections, while strategy is much fuzzier and not as closely linked to accounting principles. They may be combined roles at some firms, but they’re usually quite different.
