I’m not sure it’s a “good way” to get into IB, but it is “a way.” It is easier to move over from an internship in this area than it would be from a full-time role.

1) In the interviewee’s case, they did, but I’m not sure how common it is overall. I think they normally want people with more experience or with multiple internships.

2) I believe they focus on corporates, but some may also do sovereign debt. Many FICC desks are a lot smaller now, so coverage isn’t as broad as it once was. Not sure about developed vs. emerging markets.

2) Do distressed debt trading desks only focus on corporates, or also expand their reach to sovereign debt? Also, any preference on developed vs EM markets?

Thanks so much! About to begin a SA in S&T, so learning more about dd will be super helpful!

I don’t know of any distressed debt references specific to Asia. In practice, a lot of debt issuances worldwide are done under US or UK law. Also, a lot of the analysis outside of the legal process is similar… it’s not as if you start using different metrics or ratios just because you are in a different region.

The Moyer book is useful for U.S based analysts, but what about for European or Asian based analysts? Any recommendations – should other regions still learn about US stuffs like chapter 11?

Maybe not in Asia, but most of the bulge brackets in NY do have these groups.

Yes, it’s possible, though you’d have to answer the obvious “Why on earth do you want to return to investment banking / sell-side roles?” question effectively.

Seems like most don’t. At least not in Asia.
