Hi Eric, I’m assuming you’re an Ivey alumni, I am in my 2nd year at UWO and have applied to Ivey, would you possibly have any suggestions regarding any local firms I can reach out to to gain some relevant experience, possibly for this summer, or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
And were you able to get in touch with any bankers?

I don’t really have much to say here because we’ve covered resumes many times in the past. You can do a search to find all the resume tips and templates:

The main issue here is that the recruiting environment in France is completely different and very elitist, so normal “networking” strategies may not apply. There are some tips here:

You can apply online to win these types of internships, but you should start by contacting all the students from your school who win IB offers and ask if they can speak with you for a few minutes to share tips/advice.

This school ranks 6th in France, not very good though, my B-school is a target school of EY, KPMG. But i didn’t see any IB firms or banks go to my B-School for recruitment. So i checked on Linkedin, and I found out that there are some students came from my B-School have entered into Rothschild, JP Morgan, and Goldman Sachs. Of course not so many. I currently have two consulting internships and a bank internship. I know this would be so hard for me to break into Investment banking. But i don’t want to give up. I get help from your courses, which made my resume looks really good, and that is why the France B-school admitted me even though i came from an engineering background. But i need more help, and my question is, what i should do now to prepare to find an internship in France, like an internship in boutique firms like Rothschild, Lazard, Evercore? You mentioned so many ways to network and get an interview. But i think you missed one very important aspect—What we should do to make our resume look good/ qualified and gain recognition from people in IB firms. Seems that you have skipped this part. So can you elaborate on this aspect?

Probably not, but it’s worth a try. You have nothing to lose, and I think you could guess peoples’ email addresses if you can find the *email format* of this firm. You should be able to get that online, or try combinations like firstname_lastname@companyname.com until you find one that works (see: https://email-checker.net/).

I am currently applying for an asset management company. And I have already talked with an entry-level analyst via Linkedin. The talking went quite smoothly, however, he said that the team is quite small and he can’t refer me to anyone (maybe there are only 4-5 analysts in the team and half of them are entry-level). The most tricky thing is that I can’t find their email address anywhere on the Internet, as the firm doesn’t want to contact with the press too much and it doesn’t even have a sales team. Now my option is to reach out to the company’s Japanese and Hong Kong offices (I am Asian) to see whether analysts there could refer me to the London office. Do you think it will work? I am a little bit uncertain about it as the offices are different.

Respond by asking them if there’s nothing that the senior staff currently spends time on, but which could be offloaded onto someone more junior to free up their time for more important tasks, such as closing deals.

I recently cold e-mailed a small PE firm asking for an internship and here was their response: ‘I am afraid that we do not offer internships or work experience placements as we are a small company with limited needs for junior resource.’ How do I respond to this objection? Thanks!

You should still give them the option of Zoom or a normal phone call because they’re more likely to say yes if there are 2 options rather than 1. Also, some people don’t necessarily like Zoom unless it’s with existing teammates or clients or people they already know.

I had a quick question regarding virtual networking under the covid-era where we can’t meet the professional in-person. When sending emails, should we give them the option of doing a zoom call or a phone call, or should we just ask for a zoom call only? I want to build rapport with them and a zoom call is the closest medium to a face-to-face interaction currently, and if they want to do a phone call otherwise they can say so.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!

It’s probably too early for now. Maybe wait until closer to the end of the year or early next year.
