So, internships done before university generally don’t count for much, no matter how impressive they may appear. If you have PE/IB internship options, do them in your first or second year of university and do something else less impressive/relevant now before university begins.

I’m a Junior in highschool and looking at target colleges, with the intention of following the steps on this site to end up in IB out of college. I have had the opportunity to intern at my family’s business brokering operation, although could be able to shift to an internship at PE fund, boutique IB, or a wealth management firm. At this early stage, would it be worth it to shoot for the more professional IB, the fund, or simply stay where I am? To me it is a question of using these early internships to enter a target school vs using them for an IB offer later down the line.

Thank you for any guidance, Andrew

Yes, probably 3-4 per bank.

I’m a high school senior in the Northeast now and will be attending a target school, but will be outside the business school and studying Economics and Computer Science. I’m definitely planning to network very well and be prepared for the IB recruiting process. In terms of numbers, how many contacts would you suggest to have at each bank? By contact, I mean a good relationship in which a banker can really pull for me. I was imagining maybe around 4 good contacts per bank, but I’m not really too sure if that will be enough, in case they leave, or something else happens.

I’m 16 years old and I have just finished high-school in the UK and I want to pursue a career in investment banking. Is there anything I could do now, to improve my chances of being successful when applying to internships during university?

The EB internship is probably better because its reputation is about the same as that of the large bank, and you’re working in an actual IB role.

I mean that junior fall is better for a study abroad because recruiting might already be finished by then, as it now starts in Year 2 of university. So, you don’t lose much by going abroad and being away from campus in your junior year.

Thanks for the reply Brian.

Tbh I’m concerned over the fact that they act as principals rather than advisors, which means that I will miss out on valuable advisory experience.

I know it’s tough to say without knowing the specs, but would you say that it’s a better option than an internship with an EB (think Rothschild/Evercore/Moelis) on a multi product regional coverage role? (With the boutique being consistently top advisor in that region)

Do you mean sophomore spring is better bet because during Junior Fall the recruiting might be over? Or I might be reading wrong :)
